WHY VACATION IN GRENADA W.I.

Located on the southeastern fringes of the Caribbean Sea, Grenada is a picturesque island nation composed of the main island of Grenada and several smaller islets. Known for its idyllic beaches, luxury resorts, and its impressive spice industry, it is part of the Commonwealth realm and is one of the several countries in the Caribbean that recognize the monarch of the United Kingdom as their head of state.

Wandering around Grenada, it is easy to understand why the place is called the “Island of Spice” by locals and visitors alike. The fragrant scent of plantation spices emanates from around the island. Chief among these is nutmeg and its twin spice, mace, which comes from the same tree. In 1843 a British Merchant stopped in Grenada on his way to England and left behind a small number of nutmeg trees. Today Grenada produces some 40 percent of the world’s annual nutmeg crop, a huge amount considering the origins of this industry. Aside from nutmeg and mace, Grenada also produces significant quantities of cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and ginger.

Most visitors stay in the country’s capital, St. George’s. Situated in a horseshoe-shaped harbor in the southwestern part of the island of Grenada, St. George’s is widely renowned as one of the most beautiful capital cities in the Caribbean. With its charming red- and green-roofed houses, handsome colonial structures, tree-laden hills, and aquamarine waters, it is the epitome of a blissful tropical island town. Make sure to check out the fascinating shops and charming cafés that line its streets, as well as the old Fort George, which was established by the French in 1705.

Outside of St. George’s, there are many luxury beach resorts, nature trails, and other interesting spots to discover. Many visitors choose to stay in Grand Anse to enjoy its white-sand beach and the plethora of tourist amenities and attractions in the area. Visitors in search of water-based excursions and exploration of colorful marine life will delight in the wide array of hidden coves and snorkeling destinations found throughout the island.

After spending time under the sun, you might also want to check out some of the country’s centuries-old plantations and distilleries. These include the 17th century Belmont Estate, located an hour away from the capital, as well as the Dougaldston Estate, which is the oldest plantation in Grenada. Distilleries include the Westerhall Rum Distillery, Clark’s Court Distillery, and the River Antoine Rum Distillery, the oldest rum distiller in the Western hemisphere.
